The Boxers series began in 1999, sparked by a commission from PR publicist and former Italian fighter Venanzio Ciampa. Quigley drew a metaphorical parallel between the prizefighter and the paintertwo figures engaged in solitary, disciplined, and often brutal battles for recognition and survival.
